You'd think some clever person would start manufacturing fencing with two 'nice sides', wouldn't you? Can't be too complicated to do and there's clearly a market for it...
When our neighbour put a new fence in the chap came to ask us if we'd like him to double face it, ie we'd both have a 'good' side. We declined, and it looks fine.

I think if i were to be given a nice brand new sparkly fence it wouldn't matter which side i had.

Ditto, as long as they're good quality, is there really a 'bad' and 'good' side? It might not match on all sides, so what?

Having the side with the posts means you can easily attach trellis to the posts and have 'air' behind it for your plants rather than have to figure out how to make the trellis stand proud of the fence.

I would consider whether the theory will match the reality.

In theory, yes, a neighbour may well appreciate getting a nice new fence for free, and not mind that the small price to pay is getting the "bad" side of the fence.

However, in reality, I would consider the problems you may face.

They may object to getting the "bad" side - is this a deal breaker for you?

Is the fence on the boundary line, or on their property? Will they see the fence as a gift, as such, and decide they are entitled to do what they want with it? Paint it, attach things to it, fail to maintain it, or even replace it, without your consultation?

Will they expect you to bear the cost of maintenance and replacement, since you chose it?

A free fence could soon become a bone of contention between you.

That's a good point, both neighbour's put up the current fences. The one which keeps falling down, the neighbour is very apologetic and keeps trying to put it back but it is in bad repair. The fence posts would be 2in on our land, which is why they could keep there's up if the wanted, I just thought id let them know incase they wanted there's taken down.

He who pays the piper calls the tune. If you pay for the fence, you choose which side you look at. On planet Pimento, anyway.

Our neighbour has recently replaced some fencing. Neither of us has a 'bad side'. It fits in between posts with gravel boards at the bottom. Resting on a pre - existing brick wall of two bricks high near the house. This was chosen by the neighbours as it was most pleasing to look at and some panels scaled to give us a better outlook on to it. They talked to us about what they were doing and when we offered to pay half they declined.

In doing this he has had to cut back a well established virginia creeper and a bi coloured Ivy in our garden which we will miss. The benefit is that a very wobbly fence is now secure and looks tidier.

We will not grow our shrubs back in the short term, possibly never, as I am sure they would be disappointed. We like the neighbours, they have made a lovely job of this and we have decided to replace other hurdle fencing elsewhere in the garden to match what they have done.

For security reasons I's rather have the posts on my side. It's much easier to jump a fence from the side that has the posts.

Why don't you put a panel fence up so its the same on both sides?

generally, its the left side of your property the fence you are 'responsible' for - so its ok to have the 'nice' side facing in.
You can fence the whole lot if you want - as long as its on or inside YOUR boundary.
best to speak to the neighbours though, and keep it amicable.

We've gone with what we like really, it's two sides of 57ft each and the bottom side is around 35ft. so it's quite costly but we've got a quote we're happy with.

I think from everyone's replies we'll say we're putting the fence up and if they want there's taken down and our guys to remove it for them then that's fine, but I'll mention that if they just want to keep there's up then it's no problem and the guys will just work round theres. If the side neighbour wants to fix their fence to its to at least stop their fence from coming down that's no problems at all .
