Thanks
I assume that would be a "Letter Before Action".If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

When we went to Menorca several years ago (4 of us my family, 3 of them mate's family) we had arranged through Hertz 2x Peugot 407s from the airport. When we got there they tried to fob us off with Renault Meganes, whereas the Laguna was the direct equivalent. (They wanted €100 more to "upgrade" to the Laguna).
My mate took the Megane (which was big enough really for the 3 of them) but I "upgraded" to the Laguna as the Megane's boot wasn't big enough to take all our luggage. When we returned home we both complained to Hertz ... I got my €100 back but my mate got nothing.0 -
We had relatives home from America last year and they used Europcar for their trip. When they left the car back, they were charged £160 for a luggage rack that was supposedly mislaid.
My uncle was adamant that no such rack was present in the car and eventually after fighting with them for weeks after his return, he finally got a full refund after they they admitted that his particular model of car (a people carrier I think) did not come with a luggage rack and they had charged him incorrectly.
I think they charged him because most people wouldnt fight it as my uncle did.

Thanks all. I have sent them a letter and when, as I fully expect, they deny all responsibility and give me the same gibberish about the merits of the C5 in comparison to the C-Class, then I will hit them with a small claims procedure.
I'm really fed up with how I feel companies like Europcar are scamming consumers with unscrupulous practices, then behaving so badly afterwards when they are totally in the wrong.0 -

so if you've already received a full refund, what will you be claiming for if you attempt a small claims procedure?0 -
I can relate to this - I've been in a bind when I assumed I was booking with a reputable company and was dismayed with the service I received. Classic example of a company over-promising and under-delivering. In Europcar's defense they do have some excellent locations around the world but just like any company the personnel at the desk (and the volume of resources - in this case vehicles - at their disposal) will vary dramatically. What I've started to do when I rent a car in Europe is to book through a car rental brokerage/booking agency like Auto Europe. When I call their representative (or book online) I have the opportunity to choose the supplier in the area which I'd like to work with and this allows me to surf the net and find reviews of the local desk to make sure I'm going with the best option. I don't mind paying a little bit extra for a local company which has a better reputation and higher marks in online customer reviews. I also like having a third-party manage the customer service issues for me and run interference if a situation like this does arise - I feel like I have someone in my corner - someone who will go to bat for me if I do run into a problem.
The travel industry can be tough because a bad customer experience doesn't just cost money - it can ruin an otherwise terrific travel experience. You scrimp and save for a big vacation and it's so disheartening when something comes between you and the trip you deserve.
To the OP (original poster) - sorry that happened! And to others here who have weighed in with similar experiences I wish you luck in the future.

I'm currently going through my own ordeal with Europcar. Their behavior has been extraordinary. I didn't think companies still behaved like this. It took weeks to get a response from them regarding a cleaning fine of £54. It was for apparent dog hair - despite not owning a dog let alone one coming near the car. I asked for photos, they asked the branch to supply them but it turns out they didn't have any photos. I asked for a refund of the fine as there was no proof the cleaning fine was required. I was told that 'i couldn't have my money refunded at this time' and needed to have the claim reopened. Why it was actually closed is beyond me. I'm currently waiting for a response an email asking for my money back. The issue has been going on for around 3 weeks now.0

We got ripped off by Europcar, got our credit card co. to refund the extra, unauthorised payment and now find ourselves receiving 'Dunning letters' from a French debt collection co. called Recocash.
Just wondering if anyone knows of this rip off car hire company actually taking someone to court..?
It's for a relatively small £140 amount.0
