It's now a second hand car. I wouldn't pay it if I bought it from the dealer as it's already been paid once.

You still pay VAT no matter what the price. They can't magically sell you a car VAT free.

Well I got 30% off the last pre registered one I got and the dealer still made a profit on that. So what do you suggest? What does a zero mileage April 2014 car book at?

No idea. Just disputing your logic that the discount has anything to do with VAT.

Well it counts as a new vehicle for vat but if written off in the first 12 months the new keeper will not get a new vehicle. So any buyer will want a good discount or they will just buy new to their own spec.

VAT and perceived value for a used car are NOT linked.

For vat purposes the ops car would be classed as a new car.

I'm in a stressful situation and would really appreciate advice on how to get out of a recent purchase of a new car. I've tried to call Citizen's Advice Bureau on numerous occasions but I'm finding it impossible to get through.

I recently signed a deal for a brand new car on finance through a dealership (i.e. I obtained finance through the dealership's separate financing arm to enable me to take a car off the dealership's hands). Unfortunately, in the short time between signing the paperwork and the car being available for me to drive away, my circumstances have unexpectedly changed and I need to cancel the whole deal.

    Thanks in advance.

    That old chestnut. ;)

Phone the finance company, tell them you cant afford the car.

They'll be only too glad to cancel the agreement.

Still leaves you with the problem of "owning" a car you've yet to pay for.

You could just stick by your guns and not pay for it. It will be down to the dealership as to what they do about it.

They might do nothing, they might kick up a rumpous and then do nothing or they might take you to court for their costs.

    Hard to say.

Maybe next time though make sure you're 100% committed before making such a large purchase.

    Uh huh.

But absolutely NOT relevant to the value of it.

Keeping repeating the same sentence does not change that by the way.

What do you mean not relevant to the value of it?

20% would be nearer the mark as that's the vat rate.

The value of it is not relevant to the VAT rate.

Oh, and attempts to undermine me with personal digs rather than admit you dont know what you're talking about just makes you look like a !!!!
