How often do you wash your dog

My dog reeks all doggy smell at the moment, should I wash him or just attempt to ignore it?

I get my dog groomed about 3 times a year. He stinks at the moment and is well in need of a bath! Getting him washed is a right palaver or I would probably do it more often, say every couple of months.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I can assure you that he won't mind the smell, it's whether or not you can bear to live with it:rotfl:

Is he smelling because he's couped up more than usual? They often do if they're not going out enough for some reason, and with the weather we've been having I know it's difficult for them to spend much time outside. When did you last wash him? I know it's not good to bath them too often but if it was a good while ago it won't hurt.

We only bath ours when he's been rolling in fox poo or got himself particuarly muddy.

I guess we would bath him if he was stinking us out but I've never had a dog that smells for no reason. With our last dog, it was swimming in the river that made her pong.

I don't think a bath will harm them every now and then, especially if you use dog shampoo.

It also depends on what breed your dog is as some don't need as often as others and some types of fur self-cleans.

I have a rottie x lab and although rotties fur self-cleans labs dont so she only gets bathed twice a year, about now, as she's just finished malting:rolleyes:

I only wash my dogs when they're dirty (and by dirty I mean covered in s*** or similar). Even then, if it's muddy, wet dirt I let it dry then brush or towel it off. Dogs in the wild do not have access to shampoo, but they manage fine because their coats have a balance of natural oil. Excessive 'doggy' smells can be caused by fungal or bacterial skin in fection, ear problems, or overfilled anal glands. It's wise to get these problems ruled out by your vet before starting to go mad with the shampoo, because washing strips the natural oils from a dog's coat and can actually make the smelly problem worse. Try adding an Evening Primrose oil capsule to your dog's food once a day (or pierce it and give half if it's a small dog) - over 4-6 weeks this can help to improve the general condition of the skin and coat.

I tried one of those ones, my dog (who is NOT agile) jumped out over the screen. He was clipped on inside by his collar so he nearly strangled himself and flattened me. I wouldn't use one again.

My dog gets smelly because he likes to splash in filthy water (which is everywhere at the moment) and roll about in mud. He has a really thick long double coat too so all the muck gets matted in and I can't get it all brushed out. Although I am sure the smell doesn't bother him, he does get itchy and uncomfortable if he hasn't been groomed for a while.

He prefers to eat cow/sheep/horse sh*t than to roll in it though, I am not sure which is worse.

we have to wash ours every couple of months but she is only 12 inches tall and a white Pomeranian so she gets mucky quick but bathing her isnt too much of a problem. Luckily she doesnt actually smell but with her fur being so long it gets dirty really quickly. I dont take her to the 'poodle parlour' anymore because last time she went I asked them to give her a little trim to tidy her up and they shaved her  she looked like a little lamb and I was so upset but it all grew back - I think she actually didnt mind her new 'do' but she did look weird for a while :o
