I know about that recovery partition because I have used it last week, after reinstalling WinXP from a recovery disk called system recovery media, which came with the nc10. I had a unmountable boot volume problem that was stuck in a loop, and could not start up into XP.
The disc seemed to have installed a very basic version of XP, and I had all the drivers related to connection to router/internet missing. So I had to seek that partition and it did reinstall all the drivers.
Of course I have lost everything I had, documents etc... but it seem to have cured a few glitches I used to have, and of course it's nippier now, and I have to reinstall all the software I was using.
The only problem I have is that I tried to change the setting for my mouse to left handed but it doesn't change anything, left or right option it stays at right handed.
Before it used to work and had it for left handed, now I can't.
    I don't know why.

Probably time to update. Search out your model, update the BIOS to the latest version and max out the RAM to 2GB.
Don't worry about the Recovery Partition, as you can get the Drivers from the Samsung Support website.

Let me know how it goes.

Be careful..... When you install linux the linux loader (?grub?) overwrites the samsung MBR. This means the recovery partition is now isolated for ever and can never be reached - though it is still there. So you can never now do a factory restore.....back to win XP.......

Does this still apply if you dual boot Linux alongside XP?

I have been using computers since the late 1970's and have used all kind of UI's including punched cards.

I was a doubter and although 8 does have it's frustrations for the experienced user, it really isn't that bad. Is it an improvement over 7 for the non touchscreen user? No, not really although I do love the almost instant start up. That is a very welcome improvement.

Similarly, I've been using computers since the mid-1970s and have used everything from punch cards to research workstations to (today) the ubiquitous Mac that noone in a computer science department can be without.

I really can't see what the fuss is about with GUIs. There are some windows. There are menus. You press buttons and roughly the same thing happens. There's a CLI for intricate work. Most of the time you're starting applications. The idea that a GUI matters is like claiming you can only drive Fords, because the speedometer looks different on Vauxhalls. How long does it take to move from one GUI to another? 10 minutes?

People tell me that Apple change the GUI between releases of OSX. I can't say I've noticed, nor that I would care if I did. It's all better than punch cards, isn't it?

    Windows 7 has translucent borders...
Fortunately though you can turn off the translucency!

Thanks NiftyDigits, I have updated my Bios and I did already upgrade the RAM to 2GB, soon after I had bought the netbook.
I did upgrade bluetooth as well, as the one who was on this netbook didn't work that well, hopefully now it will work better.
There are other upgrades available too :

    Chipset
    sound (audio)
    VGA (graphics) intel
    Lan
    camera, D max
    Camera, Namuga
    wireless Lan, ATHEROS
    Play Camera
    Magic keyboard
    Easy display manager
    samsung connection manager
    easy resolution manager
    easy network manager
    samsung battery manager
    samsung update plus
    ms hotfix security (?)

Would it be worth it updating any of them?

Yes - you have the choice.

As opposed to the new OS where they based the GUI on the capabilities of a low-end mobile phone.

There's no need for the Linux grub to overwrite the Windows MBR.
It will do, by default, but almost all Linux installers offer the chance to customize the install, and you just install grub to the Linux partition, and use the Windows bootloader to choose between.
