BT selling our details?

2 years ago we moved house, I set up another account with BT and made sure nothing was suggested that I wanted them to pass on my details.
shortly after I started to get automated messages on my answer machine for ppi etc and after doing a return dial on one of them it was a company to do with BT.
I have spoken to BT who assured me they havent passed my details on which is basically rubbish.
I still recieve automated calls every day
my questions are these :-
1,why can companies pass on details (or sell them) when we have been quiet specififc about telling them not to?
2, how much money do they make?
3, do we have any redress?
answers gratefully recieved
thank you

Do the cold callers have your name ? Cold callers often use automatic diallers that just dial through number ranges playing those prerecorded messages to any that answer. I could also be that the number was known to them from previous users - numbers are recycled.0

I'm with BT too and yes I'm pretty sure they do sell our details.
The minute they set up my new phone line I started to get all sort of cold callers trying to sell me random things. BT was the only one to know my number...
There are ways to get rid of these calls though.
I registered on a site called TPS that a friend recommended.
Once you're on their list, it becomes officially illegal for cold callers to call you. If they do, there will be serious repercussions for them.
Have a look at TPS site, it's quite good and explains everything way better than me. I still get very occasionally some calls from cold callers but the minute I say "you shouldn't be calling me I opted out..." They don't even let me finish and hang up on me right away. Very effective!

Lumiana, please read post #2. There's no conspiracy here, auto-diallers don't have to be told what numbers to dial, they just dial sequentuially or randomly.
I've been with BT for more years than I care to admit to but get, perhaps, one cold call per month.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
BT doesn't sell its customers data to third parties. Indeed, the opposite is true. They guard it with a zealous secrecy that would put the NSA to shame.0

Thank you for the replies
The calls are automated recorded voices, I do know that BT was the provider of information to one of the companies.
I received a email from BT today trying to sell me a phone that "blocked nuisance calls "
I smiled at the irony!0 -

A conspiracy theory! And if true, you can report them for that. OK, how do you know they do?0 -
They(BT) do sell access to the phone book which includes your name, address and phone number. If your number is unlisted then they do not pass that information on to anyone. Maybe someone who has had your number in the past has had a listed number and the company dialling you has an out of date issue of the phone book.:footie:
