mend my kitchen door

lovely old victorian door, 2 glass panels in the top half, tough diamond patterned, not really frosted, looks like toughened glass.
Anyway...son decided to put a big hole in one of the panels today - glass everywhere, so now i need a cheap - and preferably unbreakable replacement.
(before anyone has a go about my son - dont! Hes 4 and has behaviour problems which are being addressed. He doesnt get pocket money so he cant pay for it himself!)
We need to keep something transparent there because otherwise the kitchen would be too dark, its an old house with a step down into the kitchen.
Is there anything which looks nice, would fit in and is not too expensive?

you could check out your local glazier shop and they could cut a piece of toughned glass to size for you. I had a piece done for a cooker splash back and that cost about £35 but it was a big bit of glass.

    HTH :)

Just remember if you fit perspex to go easy on it when you clean it.

My Mum fitted perspex in a kitchen door many many many years ago. She asked my Dad to clean it, and it was probably a while since it had been done, so he took a scourer to it. Result: lots of nasty scratches. And a not very happy Mum. :(

Is leaving the panels open for now an option? I realise it may not be - fire safety, noise, smells etc, but I've never had a closed door to my kitchen!

If not, I would talk to a specialist glazier / perspexer. If you still have some of the old glass they would probably be able to tell if it was toughened, safety etc or not. My son once put his head through a pane of glass in a door which I'd assumed would be at least safety glass, it was quite a new door. But it wasn't.

And doesn't perspex shatter sometimes into quite nasty shards?
