    Thanks

I had a look at those sites.

This investment seems to be a good way of spreading risk on world markets:

Vanguard FTSE All-World ETF (VWRL) OCF 0.25%

So, what would I ask my ISA helpdesk to set up for me?
Also, apart from the ISA account fees, what fees do I have on top of that for investing in "Vanguard FTSE All-World ETF "

I will have a look at that book.

Yes - I am a beginner and my use of financial language betrays that but for the small amount I am investing, I'd rather start soon and learn the hard way.

You have an ISA helpdesk? as in, a dedicated team to help you? :):p
Is your ISA provider running an online platform?

I just started my S&S ISA with Fidelity. Set up the account at begining of March, selected a FTSE all-share index fund and UK Gilt Fund, selected monthly payment plan of £50/month and left it. DD set up for 20th April. So I re-read more from Monevator site and selected a more diverse portfolio that also includes US, Europe and Pacific. Changed the monthly plan on the website and this Friday I sent off a £70 card payment to kick-start it all before the direct debit.

So... on the platform I'm using, there's no "ISA helpdesk" that I have to use. I guess I could phone them up if there was a problem etc. I just literally navigate to the page that shows my holdings, I select i want to invest or deal, and follow the next steps.

The fees were a bit confusing, as the platform I'm using has service fees (typically 0.35% per year) and also some of the funds have their own fees, so they are added together. The Monevator site suggests that the annual cost (OCR or TER) is weighted by how much of a fund you have as allocation. I was trying to find you the article but failed to locate it.

    It goes something like:

    fund 1 allocation: 20% TER: 0.30%
    fund 2 allocation: 80% TER: 1.50%

    The weighted TER for fund 1 is 20% of 0.30% = 0.06%
    The weighted TER for fund 2 is 80% of 1.50% = 1.2%

    Total for portfolio = 0.30% + 1.2% which is 1.5%

    If it was 60% for fund 1 and 40% for fund 2 then total would be: 0.18% + 0.6% = 0.78%

I don't know. Read your platform's documentation on what they would charge.

    You went for an ETF...
Make sure you check out this: http://monevator.com/compare-uk-cheapest-online-brokers/

and your platform's website / KIID documentation etc to see how much they charge for ETF dealing. This is one of the reasons I went with plain funds (that and I'm extremely new to stock & shares).
