Hi folks, got a friend coming round tomorrow to set up my new Windows 8 PC, but I suddenly realised I hadn't done anything about the XP machine. Really don't want to impose more on my friend so how do I wipe the hard drive/clean it of personal data?
Have googled system restore and formatting hard drives to wipe them, and third party software, but still a bit in the dark so would be grateful for suggestions.
Planning to put it in a box in the shed for a while until it will probably go somewhere for recycling.

That is a very good suggestion but I wouldn't have the first clue how to get it out or which part it is. Added to which I only have one good arm and currently do not own a hammer :rotfl:0

Left field suggestion here,
Stick a free OS (operating system) on it and keep it as a spare PC perhaps, Google Ubuntu or mint, but there are others.
Then you could plug it in occasionally and back up anything important to you, photo's and the like.

Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...0

possibly the most asked question on this subforum - search for dban and you will find most of them, along some sensible solutions, and some OTT solutions
take it out, keep it, and google for pics or videos!!

Is dban the same sort of thing or better than the Ccleaner option of wiping free disc space?"Things can only get better.................c/o D:Ream #The 90's

dban wipes everything, including windows, leaving an unbootable machine.
factory restore followed by ccleaner wipe free space, leaves a working machine, but no data, or recoverable data!!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply

In the end after checking out youtube I managed to extract the hard drive with little fuss. Really pleased with myself!
Will destroy at some point.
WIN 8 desktop is now up and running and what a vast improvement over our old XP PC, very happy. I believe the release of 8.2 is imminent which will improve things even more.0 -
