New area - claiming jsa?

Say a couple are looking to move to a completely new area but only one person had a job could the other claim JSA?

Would they be seen as having a job which they just left for no real reason, even though their partner has a new job in a new area and would need to more?

I think the jobcentre would treat the unemployed partner as having left "voluntarily".
  • op noone can say how the DWp will treat this for certain but I would have thought the best option would be to move, apply for JSA - assuming you are entitled to CJSA that is - if not the income of the working partner will almost certainly cancel out the right to any IJSA. If sanctioned , make sure you ask for mandatory reconsideration and then if necessary appeal. Various statistics suggest that a high percentage of sanctions are overturned on appeal if you need to go that far. Your local CAB can help you with all of this.

As already said this decision would be made by a Decision Maker and would only apply if you were claiming contribution based JSA as income based is assessed on the partner's income too.

If you would be claiming contribution based JSA then you would probably have to show that you had tried to find work in the area - proof of applications etc etc- but had been unable to.
