Who would fix floorboards?

Options
Evening all

Who would you call out to repair/adjust/replace floorboards?

I believe several upstairs boards have been lifted and not put back perfectly when re wiring and aeriel cables were installed by previous owners. One small board also has a crack. We do not need to tread on this one because it is a small perhaps 35cm board in between a long board and a wall, but it would be nice to replace it so everything is well fitted before new carpets.

Several of them have a bit of up and down movement and there is some squeaking which in an ideal world we would get fixed prior to new carpets going in.

Any idea what trademan would perform this? Companies that install carpets will not help as they just pay the men to fit the carpets and nothing else.

I am a DIY novice so do not intend to do this myself.

Cheers

A handyman would be your best bet, and the most cost effective. A joiner / carpenter could do it, but would cost more and you may struggle to find one to do such a small job.

I disagree with using a handyman and would go to a domestic joiner. DH does small jobs all the time on the basis they often lead to a bigger job so it might not be as difficult as you think to get someone.

I've just used a handyman in the past. I don't see the point in paying a carpenter or joiner's rates unless it's for a job that needs such skills.

As long as a handyman has wide experience, rather than a bloke down the road trying to earn a bit of money by doing odd jobs at weekends etc, then there is no reason why he can't do a very satisfactory job.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Whoever you get to do this, make sure you find out exactly how they intend to do it.

I've sorted out the floor boards in two rooms in our house, just before carpet has been replaced. I lifted all loose boards and re fitted them using screws, not nails. Also, I've used screws adjacent to existing nails where a board squeaks (the squeak is often caused by the board moving over the nail).

If you pay someone to just bang in a few nails in here and there, you'll still have squeaky boards.

Also, consider lifting a board just over where the light fitting is attached in the room below and make sure there's a solid piece of wood secured in place, between the joists, to which the light fitting can be attached. Worth doing before you fit carpets and future owners of your house will thank you.
