Signing off with no job ?

I was made redundant 8 months ago. I am currently on income based job seekers but I don’t get any benefits(except for my national insurance contributions) because I have 40000 in savings. I live with my elderly parents who are retired. We live in a council house and my parents get reduced council tax and rent payments. I am desperately trying to find a job but I am getting a lot of hassle and rudeness off the job centre staff. I want to sign off as I only get national insurance paid. My question is would me signing off effect the rent and council tax that my parents pay. Would the amount go back up to the full amount. Thank you

Your parents claim would still be subject to a non dependant deduction - ie the amount they take off based on your income (on the basis that it's what they expect you to contribute). You would need to provide proof that you are not working.

Good luck with looking for work

Sorry had to delete my last post as it had incorrect information!

You are classed as a non dependent.

Usually there is a non dependent deduction made from HB and CT reduction according to how much the non dependent earns.

if either of your parents receive the care component of DLA or PIP or AA then no non dependent deductions are made.

If you were to come off income based JSA then the council would assume that you had a job and would deduct the highest rate of non dependent deduction from your parents' HB and CT support.

So it is vital that they inform the council of the change of circumstances. I would expect the the council would require proof that you were not earning/had no other income but were living off your savings. Your parents would need to ask what evidence the council needs about your financial circumstances.

There are many knowledgeable people on here who know a lot about HB and CT so hopefully they will along later to explain more fully.

I do not believe that the council take a non dependent's capital into account when arriving at a potential non dependent deduction but I could be wrong!

In the event that no one answers your parents will need to ring the council and explain the situation.

Sorry but when I tried to put in a claim for housing benefit when I spent a week or so out of work only recently, (fortunately got a job very quickly) my council just kept directing me to the Jobcentre - I went in with evidence required, only to receive letter/s back "why aren't you under the Jobcentre"? they didn't seem to understand and as it cost me more to talk to the council I would have likely given up, so I really don't think you can 'chose' to leave the JC if your still needing help in another way, I was in same boat signing at worst for NI now as I understand, they just didn't understand really, I would say yes it is going to have a knock on effect or a bash your head against a brickwall - the only good thing the council accepted I didn't have a tenancy agreement and took landlord's letter, no problem, no questions about that whatsoever just to show how they view non-attendance or engagement with a Jobcentre.

These things are all pretty interdependent so if you do not go to the JC to 'prove' unemployment as such then the Council tax and Housing benefit people will either not trust your claim or not be able to action it.
