First Credit Card

Hi Everyone,

I would like to apply for my first credit card.

I not sure of my credit rating.

I earn 18k per annum. I have 2 store cards. 2 mobile contracts and I am on the electoral register.

I always manage my money well and I have never had late or missed payments.

I was going to apply with my Bank NatWest, but they have an annual fee which I don’t want to pay.

Which other companies would be suitable for me to try?

I mostly want the credit card to improve my credit rating, to aid in getting a mortgage in the future.

Thanks in advance.

  • Assuming you have nothing adverse on your credit history I would think you would be fine with a mainstream card, I have less established history than yourself and surprisingly was accepted for a mainstream card with a very reasonable limit. Like you I am building my history in preparation for a mortgage.

I would say it depends what you are looking for. If it's general spending then you may want to look at a cashback card, or a big purchase that you wish to pay over time then a 0% interest free period card may be ideal.

MSE have a soft search tool which gives you a loose idea of your chances of being accepted for each card. A soft search is only visable to you but gives you an idea of likeliness of being accepted, you can carry on with an application if you choose to but applying will leave a visable search on your history.

If you are not looking for a cashback credit card, go to the top of the page and click the 'cards loan' button underneath the picture of Martin, and click on the type of card you wish to soft search, then it will explain the cards and give you the soft search link.

    Good luck :)

Thank you...I applied for a Cashback Credit Card and was accepted with a reasonable limit.
