    If the union are not helping he should be complaining to them as well.
    Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

    Yes true but I can see why even if it were clear estoppel which seems to be your only chance you still have almost no chance of a favorable result it seems like it's a for gone conclusion. Still can kick up a fuss I guess possibly...If it's worth it...

    If it were me I would be using the union to try and either get the amount reduced (laying it on thick) or to get a very favourable payback period.

    They shouldn't just be saying 'nothing we can do guv'
