Well, it would have helped if you had said that earlier...
Your friend is not the tenant and thus the contract you quoted is irrelevant to him.
He his just a lodger of his ex-partner and he is only bound to whatever agreement they have between them.
It seems that there is no evidence of whatever such agreement, so I would think that your friend could just pack his stuff, say good bye, and leave and there would be not much his ex-partner could in practice do.0 -

Your friend is a lodger. His 'landlord' is his the ex-partner who signed the lease and is the tenant.Allow me to complicate things by explaining a bit more about the actual situation.
My friend is living in the property with his ex-partner. His ex-partner is the only one who actually signed the lease and at the time gave the impression that it was for 6 months. My friend informally agreed to stay for 6 months and pay a portion of the rent.
His contract is whatever was agreed with ex-partner.0
