RAC refusing refund

About a year ago I moved house. I did the usual letting people know I'd moved, one of which was the RAC. I tried calling them but after about half an hour in the queue gave up and wrote to them instead. I'd taken out home insurance with the AA which included free breakdown so I included in the letter that I didn't want to renew my membership when it expired - I was on automatic renewal even though I'd not actually asked to be.
I heard no more until I saw a payment from my bank go to the RAC. I tried chasing it up with them but they claimed to have not received the letter saying I'd moved - so I didn't get the renewal paperwork - or the note saying I didn't want to renew.
Also, as I'd not spotted the payment right away I was outside the 14 day cancellation timeframe so they have refused point-blank to cancel and refund.
Is there anything I can do? I guess I really should have cancelled the direct debit with my bank but there is so much to arrange when you move that I didn't really think to...

Do you have proof of postage perhaps?0

Unfortunately not.... Problem is they can just deny receipt of the letter and get away with it, it would appear. Actually, to be fair, they may not have received the letter... Their defence is that the renewal paperwork was not returned as undeliverable, but that is relying on someone who has no link to me having bothered to scribble 'not at this address' on the envelope and return it, rather than just put it in the bin...0
