Friday 4th April - What small DFW things will you do today?

When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of big "stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending

Morning all! Think it shows how much progress I'm making that I have a lie-in today but skipped out of bed to check my bank because it's Direct Debit day so I was excited to update my spreadsheet! Will pass under the next thousand bracket this month and I'm so excited!

    Today:

    Check bank (done)
    Update YNAB (done)
    Put away air dried laundry
    All cooking from stores/freezer
Got a budgetted little trip to pub later but will walk there and only have £10 to spend
    Heating off, jumpers on
Check Quidco Opinions - seems quiet lately

Hope everyone has a great day! :j

    Hi all,

Feel rubbish today, had to call in sick which I never do as I love my job!!

Tomorrow we've got to take the cat to the vet AGAIN so Jeff only knows how that will affect our finances in the short term! However after this appointment we should finally be able to claim on the insurance. Phew!

In the meantime I'll be keeping an eye on all my DDs. Switched them to a different account this month so I'm watching carefully to make sure they all go out ok. So far so good!

A quiet day otherwise. I've got to hang the washing up and it made me think about pre-MSE times when I used to regularly leave the washing in the machine so long I had to put it on to wash again! The waste of water and electricity, omg!! I'd never do that now!

    Good afternoon Nearly Weekend People,
Today's small positive money saving things:
*Saved a little bit of energy by sharing bath water, using boiling water left in kettle to kill some more weeds in front paving & not having any heating on. In fact, unless we need the fire on for a chilly evening, that's it now for heating. We all need to be building up some credit now to help with next winter's bills & get any debt on our energy accounts down.
*Cleaned whole house using minimal products.
*Did household filing, especially new financial paperwork received re new bathroom, switched some funds about to pay final vet's bill without going into bank account (final, because unfortunately, we lost our beautiful big cat last week when we had to make that last horrible sad trip to the vet. Have missed him like mad this week).
*Wrapped leaving gift for friend using all recycled materials. Looks very pretty! Always worth saving bows, decent paper, etc. Money for gift came from our Presents Piggy. We were very disciplined & did not go over the amount we had available, proving that with a bit of thought & maybe a little extra time spent looking, it's always possible to find a lovely little gift without having to spend a lot of money. Both of us have overspent on presents in the past, but we feel happier with our new system of having one of our savings 'Piggies' for presents.
*Wrote a short piece of entertainment for presenting at leaving-do tomorrow. Used recycled paper & gift box plus scrounged a little item off mr f, so no cost involved.
    *Finished shopping list.
*Pot up more seedlings & plant out a few marigolds in sheltered bits of garden. They're usually quite hardy (free seed as collected it myself from last year's flowers & dried it in a brown paper bag).
*Finished my knitting for the order I promised to have ready for this weekend. Labelled & packed it nicely so it looks professional.
Rest of this afternoon will be spent being busy in the greenhouse, so am just off to make a cup of coffee to take down there with me, & must crack on.
Hope everyone having a good day.
LPP - nice to see you back.

Hello. Had a busy day at work. Eaten packed lunch. Payed off a complete annoying loan in one go! Turned down a loan application I was sent without requesting it from a credit union.(I thought they were meant to help people to be financially healthy) Any way I'm never taking out another loan. Tea will be from whatever we have left this evening. Have a good evening everyone.

    Hi everyone,

Foxgloves, sorry to hear about your cat - I expect the house feels very empty now :( and welcome back and hi to everyone else. Ziggy, hope you are still resting up!

We are heading away on our holiday tomorrow, so I am frantically finishing last few bits off here. Its been a long week! My darling mum came and helped me clear backlog of ironing today, whilst I used her steam cleaner to blitz my house. We have guests coming to use the house while we are away, which helps offset our hol costs but means so much hassle just as you are trying to get out the door! Keep wondering if it is worth it (but of course, it is!).

So last few jobs for today (I think I may be on here until tomorrow at this rate :():

    • sweep and mop entrance hall, kitchen and bathroom DONE
    • write welcome note for guests with emergency contact numbers
    • write note for neighbours to let them know someone is staying
    • PACK ! MSE things to remember...plastic bags, containers and drinks bottles for lunches whilst there, vouchers from site, laundry tablets (cut down on weight), gifts for host family, euros, DD pocket money, kindle - check it has been turned on so new books bought with swagbucks amazon voucher have loaded Almost DONE
    • write email for work (something else I forgot to do before I left there late last night)
    • make apple and cinnamon muffins for journey with leftover bits DONE
    • roast and blitz up veg for pasta sauce for freezer DONE
    • use it up dinner - a very eclectic mix of stuff!! DONE
    • request new phone now eligible for upgrade (maybe sat am)
    • clean out car boot (keep weight down for journey)
    • move personal items into safe DONE
    • sort out log in for card
    • notify bank we are on the move!
    • tidy understairs area DONE
    • tidy tupperware and pan cupboards DONE
    • make DD bed so nice to come home to! DONE
I think that is everything! Sleep, maybe? And to think I thought today I'd be getting my nails and eyebrows done and having a chilled out day! Saved a few pennies there and will be having a at home pamper session tomorrow night when we reach friends house near the airport!

I'll be back later to motivate me to keep going with this all!

ps Well done PP for taking the clothes back! :T
  • Hi everyone,

Good news on your son's award at school Ziggy, I hope you managed to get to see him receive it? Sorry to hear about your cat, foxgloves, sending hugs. Well done PP for taking the clothes back, I bet that felt great. Have a fab holiday crazy lady, I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. And hello to everyone else!

Another mixed day, but has ended happy - phew!

Managed a few MSE small things today:
    All meals from stores
    Checked bank
    Checked postcode lottery
Did new budget sheet and letter to Barclaycard (12 month review) hope they accept new offer
Resisted going to the shop for a bottle of wine - haven't had one over the weekend for weeks and seriously nearly cracked today
Made chilli for tea and there's enough for tomorrow's tea too plus I froze a portion
Tidied DD's room and now I have a wash mountain to do
Updated the TomTom ready for our hols next week

Looking forward to not having to wake up to an alarm for a week! Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.
