Can I order civil case paperwork

Hi

I know someone going through a civil court case. I was asked to be a witness. Can I order the paperwork and see all of the evidence both parties have put forward?

Thanks in advance.

Why would a witness require this?

You can't 'order' it, no. Of course depending on the nature of the case it may be that you need to see certain documents in order to comment on them for some reason, but it's a matter for the party that you're giving evidence for or their solicitors as to how much they let you see. You certainly have no automatic right or similar to see them.

Definitely not, what a fantastic way to enable witnesses to tailor their evidence to whatever helps the side they're being called on behalf of.

As Crazy Jamie says you'll be shown relevant documents and asked questions about them, and of course your statement.
  • Thanks for the replies.

Once the case has finished and the judgement's been made what can I get copies of?

Whilst (other than in family cases) judgments are normally public documents, in the vast majority of cases, there is no written transcript of the judgment.

One can be requested but, again normally, the person or party requesting has to pay the costs of transcription.
