Why have I not had an inspector read my meter in over 7 years

I've been with my utility provider for 7 years and have never had an inspector read. I'm currently moving supplier so I'm hoping this will change.

I've had meter man readings plus my own but never one from the inspector. Has anyone else had this issue?

When the meter man comes round does he not inspect the meter? It would be a pretty boring job if all an inspector had to do was go round and check meters without taking readings.

I don't believe anyone other than a reader(or me) has looked at my meters in over 20 years.

In the main meter readers are trained to inspect the meter, they don't send someone just to inspect it.

I just rang up the utility company and they confirmed I was right.
MR on the bill means the meter man read the meter and IR means the inspector reading. No inspector has read my meter because they only send him/her to read the meter if they suspect something is going on with the meter e.g my reading was way below the meter mans reading.

  • The term used now is "safety inspection " . This is only implemented if your meter doesnt get seen by any outside party.Ofgem stipulate a 2 year minimum inspection but have given British Gas 5 year minimum inspection period. " Safety Inspection " is code for a things like customer verification and faults and tampers . I have been told never to say to any customer words like tampers , bypass, fiddling etc lest they get hysterical and accuse them of fiddling. If you have nt had a meter reader in 7 years take a peek at your meter its because the 2 year rule is not adhered to.. So its a free for all out there now for the dedicated bypasser. Money rules, we cant be upsetting the customer
