Tax Credits Question

My OH currently earns about 21,000 after tax but is currently facing redundancy.
Unfortunately his work is specialist and there isn't anything else out there in the same field and for the same wage.
Worse case scenario is that he will end up with a job that pays minimum wage and our income will be reduced.
I have used an online calculator and it says we would be entitled to 5,000 of benefits a year if he were to earn 14,000 a year. Is this correct? I have used calculators in the past and they haven't seemed to be accurate.
I gave up my job 4 months ago to look after our 13 month old daughter. She is our only child. We currently claim Child Benefit and nothing else as my OH's wage supported us all.
We have a mortgage and our bills come to about £800 a month.
Thank you in advance.
