hi all

i currently dont have a thermostat on my heating so its either on or off (on timer). i can adjust the temperature of the water in the system.

currently i have it set for minimum hours so its not wasted if i am not in (as obv it wont turn itself off) but means once the temp drops after its gone off im constantly up and down turning it back on to get the temp back up and then off again (house heats up in about 20 mins if i close the doors as is quite small).

im awaiting a survey to hopefully get free loft insulation from bg and figured i would get the best savings if it turned off when it reached the correct temp.

just wondered roughly how much i would be looking at to get a thermostat fitted? looked at the hive but thats quite expensive plus my boiler is pretty old so not sure if i could then move this to my new boiler when its replaced? also it talks about you having a thermostat already which i dont!

The easiest way to do it is to get a wireless one as it saves running wires all round the house and can be installed by a reasonably competent DIYer. I don't know how much an electrician would charge to install one.
The best sort is a programmable wireless thermostat which cost about £35 - £40 - something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Salus-RT500RF-Programmable-Room-Thermostat/dp/B003ERP1LE/ref=sr_1_1/275-3332223-7835305?ie=UTF8&qid=1396560577&sr=8-1&keywords=salus+rt500rf . They allow different temperatures to be set for different times of the day. A basic wireless stat would be slightly cheaper

Hive is very good if you are out and want to turn on the heating and/or hot water remotely by computer or mobile. The cost includes fitting although you can do this yourself and cut the price by £40. When we had it fitted we did not already have a wall thermostat. It didn't matter. I believe you can use it if you get another boiler and they will tell you if your boiler is unsuitable for any reason. If you don't want to turn the heating on and off remotely then there are cheaper thermostats available.

Yeah i would go with the wireless option too, the control box can be fitted by the boiler, and the wireless part can go, well anywhere.
cost wise your probably looking at £120 ish installed.
