Transferring number plates

OK, I'm confused and trying to talk to DVLA has got me more confused because they don't do talking, they do recorded messages repeating what I have already read on the advice notes. I'm sure that this is a simple problem that I am overthinking!

I want to transfer a number plate between two cars we own. Both cars have current tax discs.

I have the form V317.

I says "If you need to tax your vehicle, you need to apply for a tax disc".

I originally thought I needed to tax the vehicles, but when I think about it, they are taxed. Why would you not tax (well, if you are going to SORN one or the other).

So, do I need to send in two V10 tax disc applications or do I simply send in the V317 and let DVLA do their thing?

What they mean by 'need to tax it' is that if either of the vehicles is not currently taxed - then you need to tax it (i.e MUST tax it) before you can swap plates.

You can't swap plates to or from an untaxed vehicle.

As both of your vehicles are already taxed there is no problem.
