GIS systems - MAPgem?

I'm about to apply for a job where I tick all the essential and desirable boxes bar one - some knowledge of GIS systems. I'd like to at least know what is involved with GIS so I can if necessary refer to it in my application and be able to discuss it with someone if I get an interview.
I've had a look on the company's website and they refer to their system as something called MAPgem.
First does anyone know what this is? I've not had much success finding it, which is making me think in my ignorance I'm not looking for the right thing.
Second, what is the most common GIS software in use? Is there one (or two)? I've seen a few free online tutorials and seminars for various ones, which I have the time to do, but don't want to end up spending my time on one that is not well known or regarded.
Cheers!

I use GIS (Geographical Information System) at work and the one we use is the most common one, ArcGIS for Desktop:

Not heard of Mapgem but once you've mastered arcgis or quantum gis (QGIS) then you won't have trouble understanding other versions as the basic theory behind GIS software is the same.
Some info:

If you've got the time, then i'd strongly recommend buying this self study book , it includes arcgis software & 6 month licence.

You are a star...thank you so much.
This is not the first time I have seen knowledge of GIS systems as a requirement for a job I'm interested in, so I will buy the book you suggest and work my way through it regardless of whether I am successful with the job application on this occasion.0
