Best Area to Stay in Bangkok?

Hi, as some of you might have noticed, I havealready posting requests for advice on Hanoi and Hong Kong, but the last stop on my trip will be Bangkok!
Now, I have visited Bangkok twice already, but both times only for 1 night, so apart from a few beers on Koh San Road, all I did was sleep before heading on to Koh Phi Phi, via Phuket.
I’ve been trying to work out the best areato stay, but it all seems a bit overwhelming! I will be there for 3 nights with my OH, and I’m looking for somewhere with good (cheap!!) bars, restaurants, shopping, all the usual!
Also, we will be having a night out in the Koh San Road area at some point, so somewhere not too far from there would be a bonus, but not essential.
Also, if anyone could recommend any half day trips while we are there, that would be great too.
Thanks!

Three options:
1) Banglamphu Riverside. Walking distance the the KSR but not too close to the backpacker craziness. Good for river taxis during the day. Other public transport is limited.
2) Sukhumvit Rd between sois 3 and 20-ish. Right in the centre of everything and right on the Sky Train and underground networks. Hundreds of hotels to choose from.
3) Silom area. More of a business area but Slightly cheaper and quieter than Sukhumvit. Still has good public transport connections
What's your budget? You can easily spend less than £10 a night or more than £200. Personally, I tend to look in the £30-40 a night range. I like hanging out around the KSR during the day but in the evening I prefer to head back into town.0 -

This is where I was looking at..... I read it's about 8km from KSR so you can jump a taxi (but not advised in the rush hour), or get a boat, is that right?
Is "Soi" related to train stations, streets, or just general areas?
It's the last 3 days of our trip, so will prob be looking at £60 - 70 ish tops a night..... which from my experience will get us somewhere decent! (pool / decent bar / spa).
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.0 -

The "sois" are the numbered side streets. Each soi has its own characteristics and are great for exploring. On Sukhumvit, soi 1 is near the Nana sky train stop and soi 14 near the Asoke stop. Once you get past the mid-20s then things to see run out.
During the day you can get a boat from Central Pier to KSR but the services stop at about 7pm.
£60-70 a night will get you a great place. Have a look at

Personally, I like the Park Plaza Sukhumvit (http://www.parkplaza.com/bangkok-hotel-th-10110/thabgksv) which is usually £50-60/night. It's right next door to the Asoke station and the huge Terminal 21 shopping mall but there are many others in the area in that price range.0 -

I've stayed at the Hansar a few times and really like it. It's next to the sky train and walkable to a few shopping malls. It might be a bit more than you want to spend but the suites are very good.0

We stayed at The Rembrandt, right next to the skytrain and Terminal 21
It was lovely0 -
Thanks guys, I have booked the Park Plaza, getting really excited now

The Hansar looks lush but a bit out of our budget. We are going to HK at the start of our trip, so we will need to reserve funds for that.0 -

Hope you like it - but if you don't then don't come back blaming me
There may be more luxurious (and expensive) hotels in the area but you've got if for a great price. I've typically paid over £50 a night. The bar/restaurant isn't that great but there are hundreds of places to eat and drink within a few minutes walk.
What are you doing in between HK and Bangkok?0 -
