It's surely easily answered - is the nicotine in ecigs produced from tobacco or not? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
question-"can i confirm whether you've had a cigarette in the last 12 months?"
definition of cigarette-tobacco rolled in a thin wrapper for smoking.
waiting for insurance company phoning me back.
I still think i've wasted a morning here.0 -
Just back from school run and they've called again. Insurer has again advised me after checking with a manager who went and asked the underwriting dept that this is the case and that i would be classed as a non-smoker with them.
I think what i may do, as cost is an issue, is get a negligible amount of cover over the shortest term they will allow and take if from there when i've looked at documentation.
Obviously i will leave any current cover in place for the meantime.
PS-FWIW i spoke to a really helpful bloke at my current provider L & G and he stated that it's not beyond the realms that they're offering this i.e. Niche market, they're jumping the gun thinking the rest will follow suit blah blah.
He also spoke to his underwriting dept and whilst i am obviously still a smoker with them it is something that is getting looked at! Allegedly!
Smoking a pipe which was discussed is something that makes me doubt it!0 -
Response from Insurance company/Underwriters after a bit of chasing-
'Dear Blah blah
Thank you for your internet enquiry.
As per your telephone calls we can confirm that e-cigarettes are considered 'non-smoking'. We trust this meets your requirements.
Should you have any other enquiries, please do not hesitate to telephone our Customer Contact Centre '0 -
They contacted me again yesterday and i've decided to go for it for the moment as i still have a cooling-off period. I've also left my current cover with L&G in place for the meantime too (at smoker status).
The agent/broker i initially contacted and sold me the policy are Smart Insurance and policy is underwritten by Scottish Friendly. The email i mentioned above about ecigs been considered as 'non-smoking' is a reply i received from Scottish Friendly.
I'm still not 100% about this though for a couple of reasons. Firstly, under their medical questions and defintions a pipe smoker would be classified as non-smoking status which sounds crazy to me.
Secondly, and i just noticed this yesterday, is that Beagle Street who also sell for Scottish Friendly would classify me as a smoker because they ask about nicotine products if you try and generate a quick quote on their website. Does anyone know if agents/brokers can have different criteria even though they are selling policies for the same Insurer/Underwriter?? Doesn't sound right to me.0
