Android - offline maps

I have just changed my iPhone for a Samsung with the Android O/S. One of the selling points of the phone was the ability to download maps to the device so that I can use the phone to navigate without needing to be constantly downloading data on the move.

Of course, the phone's user manual doesn't go into that kind of detail, and I have struggled to find anything much in Google. Does anyone know where to get these maps? (Unfortunately, I am working nights and won't be able to go back to the shop until next week, hence the query here. I am aware I will probably have to buy a large SD card for the phone to have room for the data.)

I haven't used it yet, but I understand that NavFree might be one of the applications to look at.

I think you can still download in Google Maps for offline use, but I haven't read about it.

Open the Google map and on the bottom left hand side ( on my Samsung s4) where you can turn off satellite etc. you should see hints and tips.
The 1st hint tells you all.

  • I had NavFree for a while on my iPhone. It was a good little navigator, but it downloads maps on the fly, so it needs a constant data connection. I'm looking for maps that I can download and cache so that I can use the navigation without needing data roaming.

I can see now how to download the immediate area of the Google maps to the device. The salesperson told me about this, and apparently the maximum you can download (to have any level of detail) is about the size of a UK county. I need something a bit more extensive than that.

Co-Pilot seems the way to go - I can get all of Europe for £35, and it only needs 2GB of additional storage space. Win :)

Thank you all for your replies. Very helpful, as always.

NavFree for Android uses downloaded maps, not data. I got it yesterday and it downloaded the application (33MB ish) and the UK & ROI maps (500MB ish).
