Sewing Machine is too fast!

I bought a reconditioned sewing machine from Sewing Machines Direct ( a great company) at Christmas. It's the same as this one.

I've just attended three sewing classes and used an Elna machine which I found much, much easier to use. My sewing machine has no speed control and I barely have to touch the footpedal before it takes off at high speed. I find it impossible to sew slowly and have to resort to using the handwheel quite a lot.

How do I know if this is a possible fault with the machine? I only started sewing this year and have only ever used 2 machines so I don't know if this is normal!

    Hi.

Try putting your toes at the bottom of the foot and pressing lightly. If you put them at the top it will go at full pelt, putting them at the bottom will reduce the pressure and therefore the speed.

I had a similar problem with my old machine so I found it helped if I turned the foot pedal round so I was pressing on the other side. Good luck

It doesn't sound right to me. I have owned many machines and the speed is usually electronically controlled. Some foot controllers have a switch for fast/slow but I have never used a machine that could not be controlled by the amount of pressure you exert on the pedal.

I have bought from Sewing Machines Direct and have found them very good. Why don't you give them a ring and explain the problem. It could just be a faulty foot controller and he could send you another. Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm going to give those things a go before I contact the seller again.

The machine does go faster the harder I press, the problem that I'm having is that when I touch it as light as I can it still goes too fast for me. I just can't get it to go at the slow and steady pace of the machine in my sewing class!
