Lawn aerator spikey thing

Hello, this year i'm going to buy a lawn aerator as 'tinternet says its really good for your lawn.

Off to ebay I went and I was expecting some heavy metal drum with spikes but they appear to be lightweight plastic 49 quid jobbies

My question is, will these things be heavy enough to spike a fairly hardish lawn?

I know its a daft question but for some reason I cant see the spikes going through my lawn :D

I wouldn't waste my money. I'd just get a garden fork and aerate it that way instead by pushing down into the lawn as far as the tines of the fork will go down then raising it a little as if you're going to dig up that piece of turf then remove the fork and move in to another piece of grass.

See what machines they have in a hire shop - more likely to get a professional one there -
    eg. https://www.hss.com/g/62326/Powered-Lawn-Aerator.html

Or check with a company like this one -

There's quite a few of these franchises around who do garden care.

those cheap aerators are toys really, you need to hire a corer to go deep into the lawn, I forked my lawn and it took days, but it was wet so not as hard as it could have been
then I got a de-thatcher on lawn for a few days, applied PRE SEED FERTILISER & a few weeks later over seeded, my lawn looks a lovely dark green today, new seed just coming though
will use a cheap aerator though the summer just to put air in that top 1/2" of soil

You could make your own. Hammer some large headed nails into some suitable sized pieces of wood for your feet. Strap them to your feet like a pair of sandels and go for a walk up and down the lawn.
