Now the laughable bit would be trying to prove at the tribunal that someone who went through all the procedures, checked all the documents, but simply made the minor error of not spotting one figure in the year on one document had been passed, is guilty of "gross misconduct". Think you've a good case?
IMO, if the employee is paid to make sure things like that don't happen, it's up to the employer to make the decision based on the terms of their contract. A simple mistake it may be, but simple mistakes can have big implications. Whether that's the case here isn't the point I'm arguing; I was simply pointing out to you that telling someone they have "obviously no idea of disciplinary procedures if you think you can just give training then throw them out of the door" is somewhat unfair. You don't have to be an expert in HR to understand that there are plenty of reasons why someone might be summarily dismissed. How the conversation between you and the other poster started has no bearing on the point I was making.
I may be harsh, but I'm one of those people who believes that care in the details is important, in the same vein I'm one of those who argues that anyone who gets taken in by one of the DVLA/EHIC/Passport 'scam' sites because they're too stupid to read the terms and conditions deserves all they get.0 -
No an expired photocard licence is no longer considered valid id.
If it's the finance company, then they seriously need to rethink their policies. They don't understand the difference between authentication and authorisation.
If my licence expires, then it may not be valid for me to drive on it, but it still serves as proof that I am who I say I am. Likewise an expired passport.Philip0 -
You wonder why a finance house would want to confirm the borrower had a valid licence for a car? Their money, their rules.0

Umm, perhaps you misunderstand the difference between the photocard and the licence classes on the back of it?
If your photocard expires, it doesn't affect whether you can drive those vehicles or not - you can, right up until the date for the category on the back. And that's your 70th birthday - or, if you've reached that, it's extended for a few years at a time.
The photocard's _validity_ is what expires every ten years. Precisely because a 10yo+ photo is not great proof of ID.
I very much doubt you'll find anywhere accepting an expired photocard as proof of ID for anything but the most trivial purpose - I know for a fact that the building society who needed to take mine as proof of ID yesterday explicitly required it to be in date.0 -
It's a storm in a tea cup that could turn nasty. If possible it would be best to take the car to the dealer/garage and ask them to hold it for you until the finance is sorted.
If that's not practical a credit card deposit may ease things.
The nuclear option for the garage is to report the car as stolen, this would invalidate your insurance and probably get you a meeting within the week with the police. (easy crime to solve so they will be keen to sort)
Personally I would ask to speak to the senior person on site and apologise for the problem, I would offer a part payment of a deposit by credit card so long they are willing to refund it when the finance sorts. This should placate them and give you some time to sort.
End of the day you are driving around in a car you haven't paid for.
Ps it is up to £1000 fine for driving on an expired licence. Everyone please check the 4b date on your licence NOW.0
