Tyre Repair Gunk

I don't have a spare wheel in my car, just the repair kit with the gunk and compressor, which is ok, I don't mind, it's very quick and easy, and in some circumstances easier than changing a wheel on the roadside.
I had a flat a few weeks ago, but they wouldn't repair it because I'd used the gunk so I had to buy a new tyre. The reason they said they wouldn't repair was because they didn't want to clean the gunk out to find the puncture.
So my question, after they fitted my new tyre could I have asked for the punctured one back to clean it out myself at home then taken it back to get it repaired?

Short answer: yes.0

You can ask for it back, Its your tyre.
The problem with that is they say its affects the rubber inside and prevents the repair bonding properly.
Get yourself a spare wheel and tyre.
I considered buying an S-Max but with no spare and no space for one i wouldnt buy one. What a stupid idea not having space for one.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Taken from another forum:
My tyre place will happily clean out the tyre goo, any brand of goo they don't mind.
Prestige Wheels in Bham. Top quality service.
Continental Tyres who supply a lot of the sealant have a training video for tyre-fitters on how to deal with removing the used sealant.0 -
i'm guesing some garages will try it on and keep the tyre so they can do repairs or send it for recycling and collect the £5 or so they get for each tyre.0
-
yes they can be cleaned but tyre places will charge extra for this and they cant guarentee 100% success of the repair sticking to the inside of the tyre as the goo is very slippery..
plus also most tyre which have been run flat break up the inner wall of the tyre making it then scrap..0 -
Thanks for the replies, I'll give it a go if I get another puncture, it will be interesting to see how reluctant they are to give it to me!Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I can't access the tyre fitter training video I mentioned but I found this:
http://www.continental-tyres.co.uk/www/tyres_uk_en/themes/extended_mobility/sealant_kits/contimobilitykit_en.html
The important bit is:
In the unfortunate event of getting a puncture, you can use the ContiMobilityKit to get you back on the road again in a matter of minutes – enabling you to continue your journey and get you to the nearest tyre retailer to get the punctured tyre replaced or repaired.
No mention of having to chuck the tyre away because the sealant can't be cleaned out!0 -
If your car has room for a spare wheel then get one cheap from a scrappy or even ebay. Even if your car only has a space saver spare wheel it is still best to pick up a proper sized one.
I have a can of that gunk too which I bought once but I didn't even bother using it last time I had a puncture. I just pumped tyre up and drove the 5 miles to the tyre repair garage and had the puncture fixed for a tenner. Cheaper than a new tyre if I had used the gunk.0 -

I read that in my handbook too, but I haven't come across a tyre repair place yet that will actually repair the puncture.
I think they just see £ signs.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Use Slime
http://www.slime.com/
The stuff that manufacturers supply and products like Tyreweld are a pain to clean out which is why garages want to replace tyre.
Slime just washes out easily with ordinary water.
I am in the MX5 owners club (MX5 has no room for spare so Tyreweld is supplied with compressor) we all use Slime and I have never heard of a garage not washing it out and repairing.
Buy it on Ebay0
