They can be front windscreen and /or back window with both running at the same time while the 'skilled operator' is having a lie down in the back, or a cup of tea.

Most of the ones I see the dude is sat in the front, reading a newspaper.

I'm 99% certain (but willing to be corrected) that they are not approved for use through glass. Every scamera van I've seen has an opening rear window.

They are also manually operated, so if the guy is reading his paper he's not operating the camera... unlees he's got a mate in there ;)

Surely they have to be manually operated. I don't think they can just photo every car willy nilly. They have to have good cause i.e. a vehicle appears to be speeding?

I just remembered that things are different North of the border.

This is interesting because in England an Wales ACPO recommendations to not use these cameras through glass are not necessarily always adhered to - and claiming that the camera operator was ignoring them is not necessarily a cast iron defense.

However my comments were actually on my observations in Scotland where there is no equivalent of ACPO and now that we have a single organization for the whole area - Police Scotland - it's a very grey area.

I feel that the speed camera vans are a rule unto themselves and may well be taking pictures through glass.

But I look forward to comments from anyone who has actual experience of these Talivans or Scamobiles.

Assuming that they use glass lenses then they're always taking their pics. through glass.
