I visited a well known supermarket on 30th March and was charged the new rate of 53p for second class stamps. Postage was not due to rise until March 31st. Is this illegal? What rights do I have?

Only if they officially sell them. The corner shop can charge what it likes.
In this case they probably are an official seller though. Why didn't you pick it up at the time? Is it worth the hassle sounds like a mistake.0
