Claiming tax back after you have left the UK

Hello
My fiance and I left the UK in July 2013 to go travelling and we now live in Australia (temporarily - for the next couple of years).
I've been told we should have contacted HMRC to notify them we were leaving the country to live abroad. I've seen so many confusing links that I don't know which to follow!
What is the formal process and what is required in order to claim my tax back while abroad?
