  • Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between comparatable redress and "redress"?
On my letter from the bank it just says redress payment?
    Thank you.

Comparative redress is when they say the PPI policy was suitable for you, but should have been done in a different way i.e. a monthly charge, not included in the loan, so you are refunded the difference between the cost of the policies. Redress is a full refund of the policy.

Your letter would make it clear if they believe the policy was suitable for you but was not implemented correctly or if they agree it was miss-sold full stop.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Called MBNA to ask the simple question if paultry offer of PPI contains comparative redress or compensatory.

Firstly, MBNA call handler said she could not answer question as 'she did not know'. Then proceeded to ask some very odd questions i.e. What job did I have at the time of holding MBNA card, what job title did I hold, what salary bracket was I in, when was I divorced, did my work circumstances change at any time, when did they change....... the list goes on.

Eventually, I asked for the call to be terminated as I could not see where this interogation was leading, nor what purpose this would have on my claimj for PPI (comparative or compenstatory redress). Told at this point that the call was being recorded and all my answers would be kept on file, said the information I have given would be used by the PPI clain assessor to work out the level of compensation to pay?????

Still no answer to my question was given and left bewildered why I have been interogated????

Your question is not really what the calls handler is trained to answer. They deal with people making complaints and they ask the questions relating to that. Its largely script based with them recording the answers to pass onto someone else.

You would know if a previous payout was comparative redress as it would have said. Plus, firms that have used that unfairly have been told to automatically go back over old complaints and review them again. No action required by the consumer.

  • Original letter with the cheque did not say what redress was applied, hence why I contacted the bank to ask as per advice on this site. If the call hander is not trained to answer the question, then a referal to someone who could would have been appropriate. Plus the odd questioning still has me puzzeled

The questions you were being asked are typical of someone putting in a new PPI complaint.

The PPI complaint lines of larger firms are typically manned by people trained to do one thing and stick to that script as much as possible.

Your question is best asked in writing where it can get behind the front line. However, it is strange you didnt get a breakdown. The breakdown would state refund of premiums and interest of if comparative redress would have a deduction in there. If you didnt get a breakdown, how did you know how much was interest and how much was refund?

Not a "simple" question for a call centre operator at all. Definitely a question to be asked in writing to the actual complaint handlers.

However, why were you asking this? Your offer letter would already detail whether you were being offered a full refund or Comparative Redress.

If Comparative Redress was not mentioned in your offer letter then your refund is whatever you actually paid plus interest.

You may regard the refund as "paltry", but if that's all you paid in PPI then that's all you will ever receive back.
