Eat 2 plus 5 and stay alive!!
The latest advice is to EAT 2 PLUS 5 AND STAY ALIVE!! That is 2 portions of fruit and 5 portions of vegetables a day.If you have an allotment you have no excuse to not get your 2 plus 5 portions a day. This is about 600 gm total a day.
The latest research from the Health Survey of England analysed data from 65,000 people over 8 years.
It shows that eating up to 3 portions of fruit and vegetables a day cuts mortality at any age by 14%.
Eating up to 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, cuts mortality at any age by 29%.
Eating up to 7 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, cuts mortality at any age by 36%.
Eating 7 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day, cuts mortality at any age by 42% than those eating less than 1 portion a day.
7 daily portions cuts the risk of heart disease by 31%, and cancer by 25%.
Eating extra vegetables is more healthy than eating extra fruit. This may be due to fruit containing natural sugars. Fruit drinks only count as 1 portion a day, due to the fibre having been removed.

Why not just say eat 99 a day and be done with it.
My mate was a vegatarian and passed away aged 47. Yet my father in law who lived on red meat with chips, Fish and chips and copious quantities of beer and 30 - 40 cigarettes today yet is almost 90.

I think genetics plays a huge part, but lifestyle can improve the hand we're dealt. Whether it's worth it is the thing most of us have to decide.
A relative of mine hasn't let any veg, except potatoes & peas, pass his lips (knowingly!:rotfl:) for many decades. He is 80 and appears pretty fit and active.
He would say his dislike of vegetables is entirely vindicated. I would say that as head of household, the effect on his family may not have been benign, but we shall never know for sure.0 -
There are exceptions to everything and there may be a lucky few who can eat rubbish, smoke like chimneys and drink like fish yet live to be 90 - but the vast majority of people will benefit (in the form of a longer and more able life) by making the right lifestyle choices.
A vegetarian diet is not a guarantee of health though - even if you are vegetarian you need to ensure your diet is balanced. I've known veggies who end up quite sickly because they don't get the right proteins and minerals and others who end up with heart disease because they eat tons of cheese which is terrible for your cholesterol.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

A truly wonderful piece of science based not on experimentally sourced data but self-reporting, which lets people claim whatever they want the 'researchers' to believe.
The original '5 a day' codswallop was actually devised by a Californian woman whose job was in marketing. Guess what one of California's biggest industries is?
The fact that neo-puritans have leapt on the bandwagon since and tried to justify it doesn't detract from either its dubious origins or this latest manifestation.
Human nutrition is still a poorly understood subject, despite the prognostications of so many 'experts'. That's why there are so many contradictory claims and counter claims. Still, it gives the Daily Mail something to print.0
