My Toms spraying in the kitchen.

Hi, My neutred Tom, Tim Tim keeps spraying around his tray. Today he stood on his tray looked at me and sprayed all over the wall!. Its just unbelievable, he has two big trays and I'm always cleaning them as he wont use one more than once.
I put them on plenty of newspaper and he often stands in the tray and then wees over the edge as well, when hes not spraying.
(He has now stopped using the doormat to do his buisness which was a previous problem.)
Any suggestions please regarding how to get him to wee in the tray.

Is he spraying or just missing the tray?

One of my oldies used to stand in the tray and squat but then pee vertically backwards! I bought a high-sided hooded tray so that when she did this it just ran down the sides.

    Got the tray from PAH.

Oh what a pain! Does he seem fine in himself otherwise? If so, I'd try several things first:
    • Change the type of litter you're using - my mum's cat is picky and will only use the cheap stuff or outdoors! She's such a fussy moo.
    • Change the position of the trays - how close are they to his food? Or are they in a busy area of the house and stressing him out?
    • Can you try keeping them in the bathroom instead? Added benefit of being easier to clean away any spillages.
    • Any other cats outside that lurk around your front door?
    • Can you buy covered trays, but keep the lids open so he's still got lots of space? Will reduce mess if he wees up the side - my two use theirs like this and we had a problem of them weeing on the mat if the lids were closed. I found keeping the lids open completely stopped this issue.

Other reasons might include a bladder infection - what's his diet like? Does he eat plenty of wet food as I've read too much dry especially in male cats can be damaging as crystals form in the urine.
  • Both unfortunatley.

My neutered tom started spraying when he had cystitis and has never stopped! It happens in the house when he's stressed (such as when another tom came through the cat flap). Might be an idea to take him for a check up if it's a new behaviour, as Fluff15 says, cystitis can be very dangerous for cats if crystals block the ureter.
