Problems setting up new printer

I bought an HP 2540 printer today to use with my ipad. It says on the box, in very big letters, SMARTPHONE and TABLET Printer.
On the front of the instruction book it says "insert the software CD in your computer and follow the on- screen instructions"
What CD/DVD drive, my ipad doesn't have one!
It then says "no CD/DVD drive? Install the software from www.hp.com/eprint/DJ2540" but when I try to do this I get an error message?
It says
"Download printer setup guide for hardware and software installation
We're sorry. It seems that there was an unexpected error downloading the software for your printer. Please check back later or you can insert the CD and choose the option "No thanks, I prefer the basic CD installation"
Please someone tell me I am not going completely loopy, have I missed something?

Set up the printer on your network wirelessly then install the HP ePrint app on your iPad (from the App Store) and it should work OK as that printer is Airprint capable (the Apple wireless printer protocol). Your iPad should be connected to the same wireless network. The software youe have tried to download will be for Windows (and possibly Mac) and won't work on an iPad. If you don't already have a wireless network I really don't know whether it will be possible to use the printer at all with your iPad.0

You can copy the printer driver from CD to a USB flash drive and install from that.
But are you sure that you have the correct driver for Mac iOS? It won't work with the standard drivers for Windows or Mac OSX, which are all that are normally supplied on CD.No free lunch, and no free laptop
