lines and signs - what are the rules?

Hi All
I'm new to this, so apologies if I haven't read a previous post and am wasting time. I have a parking fine..and I want to know if it was basically my fault and is fair game.
I parked on a road where both the single yellow line and also the white residents parking bay lines had been greyed out/removed on one side of the road. On the opposite side of the road to where I parked, there was a marked out white box and as such I assumed that was the area associated with residents parking. However, what I didn't see was a sign at the top of the road (as you enter the road) that states 'permit holders parking only beyond this point mon - fri 8.30 - 6.30pm.' I didn't realise that you could put signs up without lines. I assumed that a public road with no lines was safe. I've always believed that if there is a single yellow or a white marked box, there are rules and as such I check the associated signs. Does anyone have any info as to whether signs must be accompanied by lines? Feels a little scary to think that you can get a ticket parking on a public road with no lines. Had there been lines, I would have looked for signs. Anyway, I could well be mistaken and obviously I'll sadly get on and part with hard earned cash.
Thanks

You say it's a public road but please could you confirm who has issued with the fine ?"The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis." - Dante Alighieri0

Sounds like a Restricted zone - post a pic of your PCN (BOTH sides!) on pepipoo Council parking forum:

Most Council tickets can be successfully appealed once you know how.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
