Are all second hand Pok!mon Emerald (Game Boy Advance) cartridges fake and or faulty?

My grandson wants a Pok!mon Emerald (Game Boy Advance) cartridge so I got him one from Amazon.

Fake/faulty, does not work, gives a white screen and does nothing, waiting on a refund.

Supplier does not even want it returned.

Tried another supplier, this one loads but then it waits on a saved file which is probably on the previous owners Game Boy.

Waiting on a reply after requesting a refund.

Do suppliers actually check if they work before selling them?

Anyone know where I can get one that will actually work?

The issues is that these have a little watch-type battery inside them to power the game's internal clock.

When this runs out, you'll get the symptons you see or an error about the battery running out.

Unfortunately, it's pot luck these days as to whether the battery is flat, & is getting harder to find carts with decent batteries.
You can replace these by taking off the back and soldering in a new one, but that requires a special type of battery with the solder tabs attached. (Don't try and solder to a battery without solder tabs, they can and will explode...)
