Gothia / red castle bcw default

Hi,
I wonder if someone can help me. I have received a default on my credit file from Gothia. This is for money owed to H&M from September last year. I received a letter from Gothia in Feb stating that they had been assigned the account yet they put a default on my credit file just 3 days after the date they were assigned the account. The first letter they sent me was a couple of weeks after the default had been entered. Can they give me a default when they have only just taken on the account and haven't even written to me? Is it irrelevant that they have only just taken it on if the debt was 5 months old with H&M already? Can they give me a default without any warning or letter from them first, seeing as the default is from them and not H&M? The full balance of £100 was paid just a few weeks after the default was issued but my credit is completely ruined now because of this.
