Clipping a long haired GS
Comments

It varies through the year - depending on the light outside really.
In winter months she is out with dog walker between 10:30 and 2:30 - part of this in a car collecting/dropping off dogs for/between walks but she has 2 solid hours of off lead walk/run in that. 11-12 and 13-14.
In addition - about 30 minutes with me off lead in the morning and about an hour in the evening plus last on lead walk for like 15 min.
In summer she only goes for an hour walk/run off lead with dog walker but this is because it is light before/after my work so I take her for longer myself.
It really depends on the light outside - can not let her off lead in the dark as too many foxes around here and she would just snif one one goooooooooooooooooooooo
Hips were done a while ago, both of them and all good for a long time now.0 -
My friend just clips the under carriage of her long haired GS, seems to work well for them.0

Oh heavens!!!.....i'd keep away from the clippers for sure..!
I had a ceiling fan put into two of my rooms so they could be on when I was out to keep the flat cooler.
Or could you get a fan with a timer on so it's not left on for hours unattended when you are out.
I also got mine a cool gel pad thing..but he would never use it.
I also made sure all blinds etc shut and curtains to stop any sun heating the room more.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
I also have a long haired GSD.
If she shows any sign of getting bothered we use it as an excuse for a bath! We also use tuna ice cubes which she happily licks. Just make sure she has somewhere cooler to go when she needs to. Make sure that the longest walk of the day is first thing in the morning.
We had our first GSD in Kenya, where heatstroke was much more of a problem; the UK is rarely an issue.
I do trim her hair along her belly and under her legs - but mostly to keep the mud and mess down in the winter.
Don't forget that grooming is essential to get the dead undercoat hair out.0
