Over payment of Tax Credits.

HMRC want to recover overpayments of child tax credits totalling £403.65. HMRC say the Tax year is 2005 - 2006 nearly 9 years ago). I last wrote to them about this on 25th June 2013, saying I don't remember as it was along time ago and could they provide the evidence. I finally received a letter in response to my letter dated 5th March 2014! Their letter states, a code of practice 26, 'it is possible for both you and HMRC to have met their responsibilities and yet an overpayment still occurs, which is what has happened in your case'.

HMRC state because this award has now ended, 'we will ask you to pay back £403.65 direct to us'.

I am on ESA benefit and can not afford this debt. Please help.
