But what have the bank done wrong here? Clearly a horrendous situation here for the victim but there's a big difference between appealing to the bank for some sort of goodwill gesture and trying to actually hold them accountable for something beyond their control.

Surely the first rule of Banking is Know Your Customer.

Therefore wherever the victims money has gone its went through the banking system ending up in someone's account. That someone you would think should be known to that particular Bank.

So the victim may not be able to hold their bank responsible, BUT A bank is responsible, as the monies should be traceable at all times.

    Just a thought.

I don't see why the conmen needed the 'internet password'. I assumed that it was online banking password and some balance transfer(s) initiated online.

At the risk of repeating myself, OP said "the conmen have spent £16k on her credit card" - I have to agree that it's not very clear though, perhaps OP will come back to the thread and clarify....

In the days before cordless DECT phones, VoIP and mobile phones it did serve a useful purpose.

You could answer a ringing phone on the nearest extension, ask the caller to hold on, then hang up and move to a more convenient extension to take the call.

Mobile and VoIP calls have never worked this way. Landlines these days are all digital exchanges, so the "called party" on-hook timeout will just be a software setting. As above BT are planning to reduce it significantly at some point soon.

I'm hoping someone can help with this. My Mother has been scammed by an elaborate con into giving her internet banking password away and the conmen have spent £16k on her credit card.

    ....
Is there anything we can do to convince the bank to refund the money? My Mother is 68 and retired with no way to pay back a £16k credit card debt, please help!

    Many thanks,

    Rich

Shouldn't take much convincing. The law is clear - it is for the bank to prove your mother authorised the transactions. Unless they can do that, then she is not liable.

As for leaking passwords etc., even if we all agree she was negligent (and I'm not suggesting we do), it doesn't matter. The most they could hold her liable for in this case is £50.

    1) Phone up and dispute the transactions. (Co-operate with any reasonable procedure they wish to follow ie returning forms etc.)

    2) Go to FOS if necessary.
