SSP Housing Benefit and other Benefits

Hi All. Just a quick question. My daughter is receving ssp whilst off sick of about £86 from employment, she is not receiving any other type of sick pay from the company, she's used up any savings now and is getting a bit desperate for money. She is 23 and hasn't long left Uni so doesn't have any other means of supporting herself.
So we're wondeirng if she would be able to get other benefits, she is likely to be off sick for a while yet. Thanks.

    Is she renting?

If she is then housing benefit and council tax support. Apply through local council.
  • She could qualify for 13 weeks protection where the full rent figure is used in the calculation before it is restricted to the Shared Room Rate.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

One other thing. We have had to step in and help her at present as she has been unabe to deal with her own affairs. On the form for Housing Benefit/Council Tax it states if you have good reasons it can be backdated.
There are a few reasons why she didn't apply earlier, one being, she hasn't been in a fit state to deal with her own affairs and has only now asked for help depsite being sick since January. Does anyone know what are the sorts of situations where they consider backdating? We could certainly have this supported by a doctor.

Illness is a very common reason for claims to be backdated - you have to show continous good cause so to show that she was unwell for the whole period, and that illness prevented her from contacting or asking someoen to contact HB on her behalf.

An inability to manage your own affairs is also common
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
