Hello
We've just done a website through wix.com and are looking to have one of its premium accounts. These seem to come with a free domain for a year - is there a downside to using this as opposed to buying the name though (eg) 123-reg or 1&1? If you would recommend purchasing the domain name elsewhere, which registration co do people like? We also want to run 2 or 3 email addresses to the domain name, such as info@ etc - looking for advice on best place for this too, please
Many thanks

I would be inclined to buy a domain name from somebody like 123 or heart internet (not 1&1 who will try and continue to bill you when you decide you no longer want the domain name).
With your own domain name you can have different email addresses eg info@xyz.co.uk, sales@ and so on - you decide how you want your email addresses to be set up.
At least with your own domain and not being reliant on wix (seriously bad and full of banner ads), you can create the website you want and pay for hosting.0 -
Imo, it's always best to get the name from somewhere different to where the website is hosted.
If a dispute arises, they can't hold you to random.
e.g. if you have a dispute with the name server (unlikley), they can't touch the actual website content. As long as you own the domain (check because some of these combined services don't give you ownership of the domain name) then you could always move anyway.
if you have a dispute with the hosting service, you can just host elsewhere and tell the name server to point to the new host
If you have it all together, they can just close you down with the click of their button (and that's usually when you first find out you never owned the domain name)0 -
Thanks - I did feel more inclined to buy the domain from elsewhere - I had one 'free' with a hosting service years ago and when it came to renewal it was outrageous - for that reason alone I'm not keen on the initial 'free' concept
I've never heard of heart - have just had a quick look at them. Thanks
Dumb question time here - how can I tell if I'm buying ownership of the domain or just effectively leasing it...?I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200 -
Every domain is leased. You cannot buy ownership of the domain.0

Vidahost is awesome for domains, hosting and servers. Been with them for many years and have tried way too many others before that.
Wix is pretty abysmal for a company website. Check out Themeforest for a theme and run on WordPress if you're not website-minded, it's more than straight-forward. I'd buy a domain with your hosting and use the support if you run into troubles. I wouldn't recommend 123-reg or 1and1, they're odd companies, used them before and clients use them, and they're weird.0
