I have two areas of garden which I want to clear of weeds. One is 10m x 5m; the other is 4m x 5m.The larger area, I want to lawn. The smaller, I'm not sure yet.
But I have two cats and several others visit for feeds, so want something that is pet-friendly and cost-effective.
Any other appropriate weeding advice welcome.
Thanks guys.

Glyphosate, but probably best to keep pets off until it's dried from the leaves0

Glyphosate is just about your only option. Do it on a warm day and it'll be dry in an hour. Cats eat grass, but there is no evidence I'm aware of that shows ill effects as a result of ingesting treated grass.
For large areas, get it most cheaply by buying a generic brand and purchasing a decent sprayer which you'll be able to use afterwards once washed out very thoroughly. Ready mix will work but the sprayers are short-lived.
Remember, glyphosate takes at least two weeks to show any effects, hence people coming on here and saying it doesn't work! .0 -
Do you think this would work well on weeds in a gravel drive Dave ? The PO of this house just put gravel on top of the weeds which are now growing through with a vengence. Could I spray on with a plant sprayer? It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

There are some other options for that situation, none of them cheap, but I will have to PM you later.
For regular driveway maintenance it's worth buying a knapsack sprayer, to save your back.
Something like this:

You don't need to fill it right up! 2.5 litres is ample to carry around, but the hand held jobbies are a drag.

Thanks Dave much appreciated. There's a massive barn place near us that sells just about everything - and I wouldn't be surprised if they had something like that sprayer. It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

I use salt between the crazy paving. My test subject was a dandelion. (After i accidently killed a sunflower that is).
Put about a table spoon on it and within hours you could see it withering. Just pour a trail of it now and sweep it into the cracks.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
