DIY Cat food?

Does anyone have any experience of making their own cat food? I have a 15 year old with kidney problems so am a frequent reader of Tanya's Feline CRF Forum which has a lot of useful info, but I can't quite make head or tail of the info about DIY food. There is so much to take into consideration and it's quite scary taking on the responsibility for the entire nutritional wellbeing of those you care about. But I currently spend around £12 per week on food for my 4 furr babies so something has to change
I know that my kidney probs girl has to have a lot of water content and low phosphorus in her diet, and that Taurine is very important for cats. Besides that does anyone have any tips? Really I'm after a very easy to follow recipe that you have used over many years and with many different cats and so know works for them.
Thanks

Do you spend £12 in total, or £12 each per cat?
I make most of my own food based on the Lisa Pierson recipe for home made raw. it works out pretty cheap and I am in total control of the quality.
My understanding is that quality of protein is important for kidney cats, NOT low amounts of protein....but it does depend on the level your cat is at.

so, £3 each per cat per week?
I am not sure you will cut that much by making your own TBH.0
