Barclays' new overdraft charges - will be 10 times what I'm paying now

  • I left university 10 years ago with a barclays account overdrafted at -£2000 the only job i could find was rubbish despite having a BA and Msc degree. Forcing me into deeper overdraft £3000. i have never been able to get out of this overdraft, the charges barclays imposed on me prevented it! in the last ten years i have only been unemployed for 3 years off and on, and working full time most of the time, i have never been able to save or escape this loop, these new changes mean i will go under, there is no way i can keep up on that £90 per month, and barclays wont help. WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO!

Is this still the main bank account you use? or do you do your day to day banking elsewhere now.

It sounds like realistically you need to default on the overdraft and offer them a repayment plan for the overdraft debt and ask them to consider freezing interest & charges.
You might want to take some advice from one of the debt advice charities IMPORTANT - Where to seek professional impartial advice about your debts. particularly if you have other debts as well.

  • I have just spent over an hour talking to Barclays and got no where
I ran up and over draft of 1300 while I had a student account with them which they did nothing to stop . Even though I was not earning .
My fault you may say , however now I'm working I'm gradually clearing debts .
Barclays are now going to charge me £45 per month charges on this £540 a year so what chance have in cleaning this .
I asked what rate of interest this was Louise in the complaint dept said she could not work this out .. Some banker ?... I'll tell you what rate this is shark rates . To in crease charges for future debts is bad but to do this when we already have and agreement with Barclays must be criminal . I hope some one takes them to cour and it costs them thousand in compensations again .. Our banks are a rip off

It may be of no help , but I am sure that I read somewhere that The Bank of Scotland Visa let to transfer an overdraft.
Obviously the amount and months free differ which each person.
  • Definitive, I'm glad you found someone at the bank who understands overdrafts - you can request a change to your overdraft at any point, the bank do not control this (obviously it's easier to have it reduced than increased).
Good luck with the debt busting :)
