stove company asking for more money

Hi,

I'm looking for a bit of advice.

We went to a shop that sells and fits fireplaces and log burners as we wanted a log burner.

We looked around and found one we liked. The shop worker then told us about a Scandinavian stove they were getting in which was £200 cheaper. He quoted us for supplying, fitting and parts for the Scandinavian stove and we paid our deposit to get an installation date on the basis that we would come back at the end of February to see the Scandinavian stove as that was when they would be in store. The shop said if we didn't like it we could change to the more expensive stove or cancel.

It got to early March and the shop hadn't rung. We called and they said the Scandinavian ones now wouldn't arrive until after our installation date. We therefore asked them to amend our order to the more expensive stove.

We later went to the shop to pay for the stove a few days before installation date. The shop gave us an invoice and we paid the amount on the invoice.

Now a week after installation we have just had a call saying we should have paid £200 more. We didn't have time to speak as we were at the vets so said we'd call back later.

I assume that they have not amended the price when we changed stove. We do have an invoice with the stove we have showing and with the price we paid. Given that it is their mistake we do not have to pay do we???

Is it me or has there been a very similar thread recently? (Within the last 6 months).

Edit: This might be what I was remembering ...

I wouldn't have thought so, no. It seems akin to buying a car at screen price from a dealer, paying for it, then a week later they say they've made an error and want another £500.

Did the invoice list the stove you originally ordered or the more expensive one?

THanks, slightly different situation as that person has had the wrong item fitted. We couldn't be happier with the service, got exactly what we wanted but now they say they didn't charge us enough.

We paid what we were asked to pay. If they have made a mistake then they can't ask for extra afterwards in my opinion. If we'd been told it was £200 more we may have gone elsewhere.

When you read the invoice before paying it, did it state the model of stove that you'd chosen, or the earlier (cheaper) one?
  • The original one had been crossed out and the new one written put in.

Sounds like someone got their admin wrong at the store then. Did they not write the new price in too?
  • The way it was set out didn't give a price for the actual stove, just an overall price for the fitting, lining, stove, etc... I'm pretty certain they've just forgotten to update the price from the old stove.

You have paid the price for the original stove which couldn't be delivered in time, you then opted for the more expensive one but they failed to amend the invoice in error.

You are due to pay the balance and I think you know that.

If you don't they might take you to court and if the invoice is for the original stove don't expect any help if you need some warranty work because you have no proof of purchase.
  • The invoice has the more expensive stove on and has been paid in full.

If this is the case, and you have paid the money that was stated on the invoice for the stove that you have I am not sure how you have to pay more money to them.

You have paid the money listed on the invoice, for the product listed on the invoice, and they accepted the amounts stated and handed over by you. They may have made a mistake but I am sure they cant now come back asking for more.
