Claiming for loss of power

My brother recently suffered a power cut that lasted some 18 hours and
had to throw away the contents of his fridge freezer. Instead of
claiming on his house insurance can he claim from electricity company?

TIA

Dave

My understanding is you can claim for more than 18 hours loss of electricity.

    See:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/cambridgeshire/weather/extremeweather/compensation.shtml

However that is just a standard payment - I don't believe it will cover any claimed loss i.e. Fridge Freezer contents.

    See this extract:
We have received a lot of calls asking about food spoilt because freezers have defrosted. Unfortunately, you are not entitled to compensation from 24Seven for this.

Incidentally I am surprised the fridge/freezer the contents were ruined after 18 hours. With a 36 hour power cut in a much hotter climate than UK,(after hurricanes) the contents of a freezer were fine.

To claim compensation for a power cut you need to contact your electricity distributor not supplier, although as Cardew has already mentioned it would just be a fixed amount dependant on the length of time the power was off for and he wouldn't be able to claim for anything else.

Also if the loss of power was caused by the recent bad weather then I don't think you're entitled to any compensation.
